If anything, the 2009 / 2010 social year for the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex looks to be even busier than the 2008 season. As I did for 2008, I’ll track the events for 2009 and 2010 month by month, and continue to add new events as I find out about them. I’ll attend and write about as many as I can, but of course there are certain times of the year when there’s just so much happening I just can’t make it to everything. That’s where the Skribit voting app on the top right side of the homepage comes into play. You can make suggestions for new events right there, and vote on the ones you’d like me to write about. For those instances in which two events overlap, I’ll pick the one with the most votes to attend.

2008 Events in the DFW Metroplex
January 20th, 2008 · 22 Comments
The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is a happening place, with dozens of events to attend across the course of the year in the various towns and cities that make up this bustling metropolis. I’ll use this page keep track of what’s scheduled every month. I’ll continue to add events as they appear and the dates are firmed up, and it’s my intention to attend and write about these events as they happen, insofar as that’s possible. At the moment, the list is weighted heavily toward large tourist-oriented events like festivals and celebrations, but I’ll soon add big-name concerts and other top draws to the list. I’ll also insert new events as they’re announced or as I find them, so please check back regularly. With rare exceptions (such as the first game of the season), expect local sport events to have their own special page.

The Texas Rangers and the Ballpark in Arlington
December 29th, 2007 · No Comments
At the corner of East Randol Mill Road and Stadium Drive in Arlington, Texas, roughly midway between Dallas and Fort Worth, stands this monument to the Metroplex’s love of baseball. It’s had several names, but since March 2007 it’s been called the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. That’s because it’s where the Texas Rangers play their home games.

As you can see, I took these sucky photos during the off season, when the place was shut down for repairs. Here’s how it looks from a distance, on a brighter day than the one I visited on:

Beyond having to constantly weave my way through neighborhood street games populated by erstwhile young Peles and Beckhams, I don’t have much to do with soccer.
Apparently, however, I’m an exception to the local rule.

How About Them Dallas Stars, Eh?
November 27th, 2007 · No Comments
The combination of “hockey” and “Texas” may seem counterintuitive, given the general lack of ice in the Lone Star State, but by golly, it works. While watching a bunch of guys chase after a puck doesn’t come as natural to Texas fans as football, we’ve learned to enjoy it; and over the past decade or so, hockey has started to spread all over Texas, even unto the smaller cities like Odessa and Midland (which you may recall as the President’s hometown). Notice that I said that hockey has spread, not just its popularity. Minor-league teams are popping up all over. Odessa’s is called the Jackalopes.
